Johannesburg - A
man accused of murdering a police officer in Kagiso, Krugersdorp, has appeared
in the Krugersdorp Magistrate's Court, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.
Mntungani Mbatha,
39, would be kept in custody and his case was postponed to Tuesday, Captain
Augustinah Selepe said.
Lt-Col Knox
Chauke, 56, who was attached to the police's national training division, was
shot dead in the driveway of his home around 6am on Friday.
“Three suspects
that are linked to this murder are still at large. A manhunt for them is
continuing,” said Selepe.
On Sunday, Lt-Col
Lungelo Dlamini said the motive for the shooting was unknown.
National police
commissioner Riah Phiyega said she was outraged and concerned by the rate at
which police officers were being killed.
“As the SAPS
family, we are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleagues,” she said.
“We know that
their abrupt and untimely passing has caused untold grief to their family
members, close friends, and colleagues.”
She appealed to
anyone with information on police killings to contact police. - Sapa
