34 killed in concert stampede in Guinea

At least 34 people have been killed in a stampede during a concert in the Guinean capital, Conakry.
Hospital officials said on Wednesday that 11 children were among the victims of the incident, which
occurred during a concert held on a beach in the Ratoma neighborhood of Conakry.
The celebratory concert was being held on July 29 to mark the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
Medics said dozens of bodies were sent to the morgue of Donka hospital in the capital. According to reports, a further 58 people have also received treatment for minor injuries.
“There was a stampede to get out of the concert, it was after the show that it all happened. The crowd wanted to get out but there was a rope that blocked the way,” a police source said.
“People at the back began pushing and people fell, creating a mass panic,” he added.
The Guinean government said in a statement that it was shocked by the incident. It also declared a week of national mourning over the incident, which it has called a “tragic drama.”
In January last year, six people were killed in Conakry when a bridge collapsed during New Year’s celebrations. Two people were also killed in a stampede at a concert in Guinea in 2001.
