The Abia State Police Command, on Tuesday, paraded three female suspects, Blessing Oluchukwu, Promise Onyezu, and Nkechi Kalu, arrested at Osisioma Aba, while allegedly negotiating to sell the unborn child of one of them, Onyezu, said to be six months old pregnant.
According to police, one of the suspects, Kalu, had earlier collected an advance of N50,000 from a
suspected buyer, one Blessing Oluchukwu .
The command also paraded one Joseph Edet Essien a native of Ifetai in Calabar, Cross River State, who allegedly stole a three-year-old child, Dorcas Emmanuel Usen.
Parading the suspect, Police Public Relations Officer, Geoffrey Ogbonna , said the suspected child thief was arrested with the victim at Aba while negotiating with a buyer now at large.
He said upon interrogation, the suspect confessed he stole the victim from Calabar where the mother had kept her in the custody of her siblings .
In an interview with journalists, the suspect confessed to the crime , saying he was promised N200,000 by the buyer, and pleaded for forgiveness.
There was however, a mild drama when the suspect was asked to pose for a photograph with the victim but the innocent child never wanted him to come close to her, as she became hostile and burst into tears.
Paraded also were three suspected child traffickers – Chidimma Ukpai, Felicia Ahukanna, 62, and Peace Ogbonna.
Police said the suspects, all from Alaukwu community in Isiala Ngwa South were found in possession of three babies including a set of twin allegedly stollen at gun point by their male accomplices, one Lucky Ohakwe, and another still at large.
According to police the twins had since been re- united with their mother, Mrs. Chinyere Friday.
The prime suspect, the 62-year-old Ahukanna , however , denied any involvement in the crime, saying she was in her home when she suddenly saw a man with a bag, which was later discovered to contain a twin.
Paraded also was a group of seven pregnant young women said to have been arrested at Osisioma junction in Aba, who upon interrogation confessed that they had earlier been arrested and released by the operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
According to them , NSCDC rescued them from a baby factory in Umunkpeyi, Isislangwa South, and hired a commercial bus driver to convey them back to their home town in Imo State.
They said when the driver dropped them off at Douglass Road in Owerri , instead of going to their homes, they chattered another bus to return to the baby factory.
Police said all suspects would be charged to court after investigations.
Similarly, four suspected cultists, Kalu Nnanna, Prince Charles, Maxwell Njoku, and Sabastine Frankline were paraded.
The suspects who claimed to be students of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike, were arrested with locally made pistol by a police patrol team at Ikwuano while allegedly engaging in cult activities.
