Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu says Tel Aviv will push ahead with the destruction of tunnels in the
Gaza Strip with or without a ceasefire.
Netanyahu said on Thursday at the start of a cabinet meeting
that Tel Aviv is “determined to
complete” the mission of destroying the tunnels
dug by Palestinian fighters into Israel.
"I
won’t agree to any proposal that will not enable the Israeli military to finish
this important task, for the sake of Israel's security," he said.
The Israeli military said on Wednesday that accomplishing
the mission will need several more days, adding it had called up an additional
16,000 reservists.
Also on Wednesday, Netanyahu’s security cabinet approved to
continue aerial and ground assaults, launched on July 8, in the besieged
enclave.
At least 1,370 Palestinians have been killed and some 7,700
others injured since Tel Aviv began its offensive. Tel Aviv has targeted
hospitals, clinics, and shelters over the past 24 days.
Al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Palestinian
resistance movement Hamas, has been launching retaliatory attacks against
Israel.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has strongly condemned an
Israeli attack on a UN-run school that killed at least 20 people. The
shelling of the school in the Jabaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza took place
on Wednesday, while more than 3,000 displaced Palestinian refugees were
sheltering in the school.
The Israeli army also shelled Shejaiya district and killed
17 people. Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum condemned the attack and said,
"Such a massacre requires an earthquake-like response."
